So an overwhelming vote (9 out of 20) for the right answer, number 4 it was.
Liripoop (or liripipe, as maverick remembered) according to Chambers, is a long appendage, attached to the end of a hood.
I came across the word in its liripipe form, in the UK Saturday Times jumbo crossword about two weeks ago. Having constructed the word from the clue, I had to look up its meaning.
Since a lot of you knew the word, I have visions of you all at your desks idly toying with your liripoops
