gigil: slang "what was that word again?!"
wink
The correct definition is A

(Mind you. I probably should have chosen C)
Posted By: LukeJavan8 Re: Time out for Hogwash GIGIL Daffy's - 09/07/12 12:46 AM
I'll go with

K
Posted By: wofahulicodoc Re: Time out for Hogwash GIGIL Daffy's - 09/07/12 01:06 AM
Yes, but which K?
Posted By: LukeJavan8 Re: Time out for Hogwash GIGIL Daffy's - 09/07/12 01:08 AM
You are so perceptive.

The "K" dealing with the scrimshaw .
Posted By: jenny jenny Re: Time out for Hogwash GIGIL Daffy's - 09/07/12 05:11 AM
Perhaps our underworld Hogmistress should disqualify both "K's", because ambiguity is too much like the stuff of life. smile

Sorry folks...my mistake. Correction made and I do apologise for any inconvenience.
Posted By: Avy Re: Time out for Hogwash GIGIL Daffy's - 09/07/12 10:19 AM
"B"
Posted By: jenny jenny Re: Time out for Hogwash GIGIL Daffy's - 09/07/12 02:53 PM
Gee Golly Wow, all the definitions seem plausible (except one).
But if you say J real fast three times it sounds logical.
My guess is J J J smile
Posted By: wofahulicodoc Re: Time out for Hogwash GIGIL Daffy's - 09/07/12 07:34 PM
C looks good, D looks good, K looks good, M looks good.

One thing puzzles me: the word was posted with the hint4 that it was encountered on a TV program. What kind of TV program could have included this word, if [number] is the correct definition?

I like M for most convincing, but I have to vote for D as most likely right.

Fill in any number(sic) and Jeopardy might fit the bill.
Posted By: wofahulicodoc Oops... - 09/07/12 10:34 PM

Fill in any number (sic)

I must have used too much Xylocaine®....
Posted By: tsuwm Re: Time out for Hogwash GIGIL Daffy's - 09/08/12 06:49 PM
at first blush, many of these seem plausible. but then, at second blush, most fail the dictionary test; I've narrowed it down to four, CJKorM... if forced to choose, I'd probly pick J.
Posted By: BranShea Re: Time out for Hogwash GIGIL Daffy's - 09/08/12 07:15 PM
From TV, could this mean it isn't in any dictionary at all?

And let's get it over with. I like H.
Posted By: belMarduk Re: Time out for Hogwash GIGIL Daffy's - 09/09/12 01:00 AM
I vote for C

I may vote for something different tomorrow after having calmed down from a birthday party's worth of wine drinking (hubby's birthday, not mine) but today, C it is.
Posted By: Candy Re: Time out for Hogwash GIGIL Daffy's - 09/09/12 11:23 AM
Thanks guys...I have have noted the votes and enjoyed the discussion. Its more sweater because I know which one it is.
Posted By: Faldage Re: Time out for Hogwash GIGIL Daffy's - 09/09/12 01:39 PM
A sounds good but I wouldn't think it would be spelled that way with the second G hard. L would be good if it weren't said to be a verb but then given a noun definition. M sounds like the kind of definition I would have come up with, but didn't this time around. So I think I'll go with M

Posted By: wofahulicodoc It's a typo - 09/09/12 05:42 PM

"Sweeter," Luke, "sweeter"... wink
Posted By: LukeJavan8 Re: It's a typo - 09/09/12 05:48 PM
more sweeter?

Just teasing, Candy! Positive,Comparative, Superlative.
Posted By: Candy Re: It's a typo - 09/10/12 11:46 AM
I know...no offence taken.

It was typo as Wofa said....but maybe I was 'sweating' too!
Posted By: LukeJavan8 Re: It's a typo - 09/10/12 03:38 PM
I was actually referring to the "double comparative"
like " more better", don't worry about it. Sweeter
is itself the comparative of sweet, doesn't need the
"more". Just the teacher in me, always correcting
grammar, even when it does not need correcting. Thanks
for not taking offense.

The most unkindest cut of all.
Posted By: wofahulicodoc error analysis - 09/11/12 12:25 AM

Actually I would postulate it was an editing-incompletely error more than a typo. That it started out something like "...it's more fun knowing which one it is..." and got edited from " more fun" to "sweeter" except that "more" didn't get erased. And then sweeter had the lapsus digitae and came out sweater.

(There, now doesn't that sound authoritative? And I wasn't even the author!)

But we know what you meant, anyway. In this case, at least, I'm a descriptivist.
Posted By: bexter Re: error analysis - 09/12/12 07:56 AM
I want G to be right so much (mainly because of the iguanas) so I vote G
Posted By: BranShea Re: error analysis - 09/12/12 09:58 PM
I like that one too bexter, also because of the iguanas but I got to stick to my hash.
Posted By: olly Re: error analysis - 09/13/12 01:16 AM
Just for the L of it
Posted By: Candy Re: error analysis - 09/13/12 10:08 AM
Gee Bex, thanks and luv you too olly.

A few more votes to come, I think...

Posted By: Jackie Re: Time out for Hogwash GIGIL Daffy's - 09/17/12 02:03 AM
It's gotta be D. I might start using it even if it's not, as in, "Hey, you gigil, you"! wink
Posted By: Candy Re: Time out for Hogwash GIGIL Daffy's - 09/17/12 10:02 AM
Thanks Jackie. We wait for one more vote....
Posted By: Owlbow Re: Time out for Hogwash GIGIL Daffy's - 09/17/12 11:20 AM
OK then.
Posted By: belMarduk Re: Time out for Hogwash GIGIL Daffy's - 09/21/12 09:53 PM
And, so, and...

Who won? What does it mean? Very, very curious!
Posted By: hogmaster Re: Time out for Hogwash GIGIL Daffy's - 09/21/12 10:13 PM
Candy must still be waiting on someone.. but it's been two(2) weeks since this was posted - typically after one week, a warning is given that time has expired and then soon thereafter.. too bad!

courtesy should be shown to those who have guessed as well as to those who just haven't gotten around tuit. (or you could LIU, like I did..)
Posted By: LukeJavan8 Re: Time out for Hogwash GIGIL Daffy's - 09/21/12 11:26 PM
Look who speaks of courtesy.
Posted By: Faldage Re: Time out for Hogwash GIGIL Daffy's - 09/22/12 12:08 AM
It's not in the OED (at least, not in the brick and mortar OED) so it isn't really a word.
Posted By: jenny jenny Re: Time out for Hogwash GIGIL Daffy's - 09/22/12 12:54 AM
I think Candy is in jail.

And wrongo Faldage, the Hogwash word is a word. I found it in a book. It is spelled differently and pronounced differently and the meaning is not quite the same but it is still the Hogwash word.

Wanna bet? cool
Give the gal a break, guys! She is poorly sick at present. Not sure what, exactly: last I heard, (a week ago) she had a cold, but that is often the start of something else.
Posted By: Faldage Re: Time out for Hogwash GIGIL Daffy's - 09/22/12 12:08 PM
I was being snarky, jj. I know there's perfectly cromulent words that aren't in the dictionary. For example, try looking up "gullible".
Posted By: jenny jenny Re: Time out for Hogwash GIGIL Daffy's - 09/22/12 03:01 PM
Get well soon, Candy. You are the sweet key note of an otherwise discordant band of Hogwashers. smile

And as for you, Faldage.
I knew you were being snarky [whatever "snarky" means] and I will look up "gullible" right after I check my Funk and Wagnalls for "cromulent" to see if there's any such word. smirk

There should be no ambiguity as the correction was made long before Owlbow voted.

Tsuwm - maybe you should change your name to Cassandra. (Although, admittedly, you are commenting on the past, rather than the future. But the syndrome os the same.)
