mummichog.
It's not really obscure, I saw it in some dictionaries. I just would like to know who knows without the use of dictionaries the meaning of the word. Guesses are allowed, dictionaries not. Bless the return of the dropdown menu. I can be bold again.

You running this as a regular hogwash?
Posted By: Jackie Re: Half - a - hog - 11/15/11 03:28 AM
I've never seen it. And can't even guess at its meaning.
Posted By: BranShea Re: Half - a - hog / mummichog - 11/15/11 08:03 AM
I have no time to do the full rituals. Just see who comes closest to or knows the word. I thought in stead of well defined-nitions it could run till one guesses or appears to know the meaning. Which gives a winner without all the editing counting etc. to do.

A game of guess.

I have no idea either, never come across it.

Bran...I'm upset you didn't run it as hog word mad

(but I'm glad you got your boldness back).

It sounds as though it should be the diminutive maternal parent of a CHOG
Posted By: BranShea Re: Half - a - hog / mummichog - 11/15/11 06:11 PM
Ha! The shrewd answer of a old routineer. Now for the chog...

Candy, any one willing to do the work could take over.
I can deliver a false definiton, but for the whole work I suffer from typotoxicosis.
Posted By: Jackie Re: Half - a - hog / mummichog - 11/16/11 12:10 AM
...sounds vaguely Scottish. Maybe.
Posted By: Candy Re: Half - a - hog / mummichog - 11/16/11 11:26 AM
or Chinese.
little dogs?

A hot drink sold by street vendors at old mummers plays in England and Scotland.??

Come experts of the obscure, I was so sure olly or tsuwm would know the word right away. If not Faldage. I'm not disappointed, just a wee bit melancholic.. laugh
I esteemed your knowlegde so much!

A variety of pemmican made by the Narragansett tribe.
Posted By: wofahulicodoc Re: Half - a - hog / mummichog - 11/17/11 03:09 AM
It's a variety of clam found on the northern US/Canadian Atlantic coast; similar to the quahog. Sometimes spelled with two Gs, as mummichogg

And they're either wrapped up or they don't speak, right?
Posted By: Tromboniator Re: Half - a - hog / mummichog - 11/17/11 04:34 AM
Mum's the word, or they clammed up?
Posted By: Rhubarb Commando Re: Half - a - hog / mummichog - 11/17/11 07:35 PM
Such a shame that they're silent - the world could be their oyster ...
Posted By: Owlbow Re: Half - a - hog / mummichog - 11/17/11 07:38 PM
Hi all
I happen to know what it means.
My cousin in NJ introduced me to the word.
That's not much of a hint is it?
Posted By: tsuwm Re: Half - a - hog / mummichog - 11/18/11 05:04 PM
well, I'm all for mosquito control!
Posted By: Rhubarb Commando Re: Half - a - hog / mummichog - 11/18/11 05:36 PM
Hoping for a net result?
Posted By: BranShea Re: Half - a - hog / mummichog - 11/18/11 09:36 PM
If you know the word, esteemed owl, then say it and you'll be the unique winner of a halfwash hog.

(I'd be happy if rhubrb cmmnder would give a serious hogwash, but it's best to be 10 in that game.)

Best before the first snow falls.

Don't know what stuwm is buzzing, but he seems to have lost his appetite for leading a round. So our hopes are for Rhubarb Commander?

Well, I am considerably more than 10! frown

I had three boarders promise almost immediatly that they would take part; so, ever the optimist, I have set up a Hogwash as "Rhuby's Hogwash."

Roll up! Roll up! Try your luck! Win a Kupie Doll for the little lady!

crazy

As dear Owlbow knows the word but does not want to tell it I'll now blow the half/hog. Now that a whole one seems to get started.

fundulus heteroclitus, oftewel: mummichog

mummichog

Ain't she sweet.....

from your link:
Mummichogs are used to stock otherwise fishless ponds that breed mosquitos, and within three days the ponds are normally mosquito free.

Quote:
Mummichogs are often caught in seines and minnow traps to be sold as live bait for fishermen.

All that they do for us and we sell them as bait.

I was waiting, (too long), for others' inputs.

My old home computer is dead. This may explain my inconsistent appearances here. As of late last evening, we have a brandy new one built by our talented son who works at the Fletcher School at Tufts. I am to set it up after work, (where I'm at now), today.

We used to fish for Fluke, (but caught mostly Sea Robins), off Sandy Hook NJ using mummies for bait. Yes - I am one of the ingrates. blush
I knew that it was a Native American word, but no more specifics than that. Does that entitle me to half a win of this half hog? If so, may I request a rear quarter?

Posted By: BranShea Re: mummichog - 11/21/11 07:22 PM
You are the winner of the whole chog. I know your words are to be trusted. I did not want to keep the ½ one running with the new whole one. See Rhubarb Commando's thread (incunabulum) Enjoy the new computer. smile

For the native Am. word :

You read my link better than I did. It also proves that you read my link before I did, how's that? cool

may I request a rear quarter? Why, owly--is that where your pockets are? whistle
Posted By: Tromboniator Re: mummichog - 11/29/11 03:44 PM
Wow, is it really a Narragansett word? That was sheer guesswork on my part.
