I cannot duplicate Alex's doggerel, but I can try for some shaggy doggerel:

The leader of the D-firn pulled out his small L-firn as he crossed the C-firn, from which he could look down upon the K-firn, alongside which was an M-firn skirting the H-firn. He N-firned. The B-firn hid what looked almost like an A-firn, particularly since a great deal of it was F-firn; he mused briefly that he could have used some of it for G-firns, but he would have to use O-firns to hold the crossing pieces together to protect his group’s I-firns from the dessicating effects of the P-firns. Perhaps when they reached the shore they would have to use their L-firns to open up the E-firns on their boat for the recaulking operation, which would allow them to sail across the channel to the closest telefirn, with which he would ask his control for permission set up the J-firn, provided his men could find a Q-firn in which to hide the antenna. The area they had found on this island had not actually been a Q-firn, resembling more an A-firn, which was totally useless to him. Darned firners all wanted a piece of the action, he thought to himself, but you can’t get them to recognize the critical difference between a W-firn and an A-firn.

A the area used as the hearth in Pueblo cliff dwellings.

B. The residue of underbrush and debris left after clear-felling of stands of pine trees

C. Snow more than a year old on a glacier

D. a small, lightly-armed party sent out to scout or hunt for a larger armed force

E. center seam of the underbelly of a boat which supports the long, stabilizing fin on sailing vessels

F. bright green growth that appears on conifers in the spring

G The arch shaped poles that form the framework of an Iroquois longhouse roof

H. outer edges of a heath where wildflowers grow
I. A person's leg

J. quick electronic surveillance by US presidents to prevent suprise foreign attack. Fast Investigations of Renegade Nations. (FIRN)

K a gently rolling Scottish hillside. covered with low brush

L. A small sheath knife

M. A bog

N. Scottish variant of the verb "to frown."

O. Wooden peg for holding a tenon in a mortice

P. Hot, dry, highly-ionised northwester, common in summer along the South Island's East Coast

Q. A drystone enclosure, roughly circular in shape, typically sited on a natural or artifical mound

R. A scenic turnout

gimme a B-firn.

Q-firn for me
Posted By: Alex Williams Re: Hammer that peppermint pig - 01/08/06 01:21 PM
I vote for L.
Posted By: themilum Re: Hammer that peppermint pig - 01/08/06 01:55 PM
Me? I personally N-firm upon all lettered firns, but as the H-firn is known in Scotland as a K-firn, it sounded good too.
But then again H stands for "heath" so what's a girl to do?

Anyway, after much deliberation, I'll firnally and firnly decided to stick with H-firn.
And me being wrong won't make me change my mind.

( Hat's off to the Hogmaster. It ain't easy talking in firn talk with only one verb in play. Nice touch, Ted,)
Posted By: Father Steve Re: Hammer that peppermint pig - 01/08/06 01:58 PM
F-firn it is, then.
Posted By: Logwood Re: Hammer that peppermint pig - 01/08/06 02:21 PM
Without too many speculations this time... I'm with consuelo, Q-firn.
Posted By: Marianna Re: Hammer that peppermint pig - 01/08/06 02:52 PM
It's got to be O because I have no pirn what it means... tenon? mortice? Are these, like, real words?
Posted By: sjmaxq Re: Hammer that peppermint pig - 01/08/06 05:57 PM
I'll join the Q on this one.
Posted By: Jackie Re: Hammer that peppermint pig - 01/08/06 11:36 PM
C
Posted By: maverick Re: Hammer that peppermint pig - 01/08/06 11:44 PM
I'm tempted to C Jackie at the foot of the glacier, but first I must take a P ~ it may be only hot air but he's my brother

Posted By: wofahulicodoc Re: Hammer that peppermint pig - 01/09/06 01:53 AM
O wotthehell...

and isn't "mortice" really "mortise"? Or was that merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative?

mortice is the rightpond spelling. Don't take offence.
Posted By: Elizabeth Creith Re: Hammer that peppermint pig - 01/09/06 01:53 PM
I'll Q up with the others...isn't the "mortise/mortice" question another left-pond vs right-pond spelling thing?

Edit: Oops, TEd - is this what they call "mantling"?
Posted By: musick Re: Hammer that peppermint pig - 01/09/06 10:26 PM
G for me.
Posted By: tsuwm Re: Hammer that peppermint pig - 01/09/06 10:47 PM
I'm prolly thinking of some other obscure word (I get that a lot); but I'll go with C.
Posted By: Faldage Re: Hammer that peppermint pig - 01/09/06 11:23 PM
Q's got way too many votes.

I like C but I'll go for M.
Posted By: WhitmanO'Neill Re: Hammer that peppermint pig - 01/10/06 01:20 PM
I liked "C", but thought the wording is suspect. Then I got bogged down with bog and the Scots bent, then I saw Jackie a tsuwm whacking the "C" out of orbit, so I'll take my first hunch and C .

Upon reading the definitions, my memory was jogged into recognizing the correct one. I therefore disqualify myself from voting.
This was an excellent set of definitions.
Excellent job TEd. Thanks.

Uh, Owlbow, you curtsy to a fault.

If you KNOW the definition AFTER reading the definition
then it is most condescending to other piggers not to
choose what you know.

By not voting what you know you lessen the gloat of those who have also fairly and squarely guessed correctly.

Oh well, now I guess it is too late to post what you know because everyone would know that you know and choose your choice.

On the other hand you could lie!

Or could be lying.

I am not a fault, even though I am being curtsied to. I think I am or am not anyway.

And so far no one has guessed correctly. Any vote(s) for the correct definition stem(s) not from guessing but from actual knowledge of the word. Or not. Wait. Let me think. Oh, I might have forgotten to post the correct definition. Or not. Maybe I left it out on purpose.

Sheesh. It's a game, guy!

Why're you being so serious about it?

My father's last words were:

Never point a gun at anyone, unless you plan to kill them; and

Never cheat, unless you're sure you can get away with it -- or she's so goddamn sweet you'll hemorage if you don't.

Really now Ted, you think I think Hogwash serious?

Think about it. Owlbow bailed out unnecessarily because he didn't understand the indulgent manner of Hogwash.

What? You don't want goodbuddy Owlbow to vote?

That's exactly what my father said. Did your father know my father? Or were they both just working off the same script?

I'll ask him next time I see him. [/knock on]

W firn? Is there a secret list with additional candidates?

W-firn.

For some reason, this makes think of Clouseau - "I've come to fix your firn".

Please note that on my keyboard the W is next to the Q. My mistake.

Still waiting for a few last-minute votes here. Only two days left.

Yeah, I thought that, as it (Q-firn) makes sense in your presentation.
I know that my attempts at humor are often too obtuse, just not funny, ("behms"), and while I know I'll never be a TEd, it hasn't stopped me yet.
No enmity intended.
