we've had lots of discussions in the dim, dark past regarding words for male- and female-specific activities. one such was the male version of a feminist (which came up during a 'chauvinism' thread); suggestions included malist and masculinist. so, fwiw, I submit:

the worthless word for the day is: hominist
someone who advocates equal rights for men

coined by G.B. Shaw in the preface to "Man and Superman" (1903)

If you had not given the definition, I would have supposed it was someone who dined exclusively on hominy, or who was engaged in homiletics. Hommm.....

Ohmigawd! Ow, Bob, you're making my stomach hurt from laughing so hard! Actually, my first mental leap was picturing a rabid murderer of males only...

i don't know how wives fare down under-- but statistics in US show that longevity increases for males once they marry, and decreased for females.
So the longest lived populations is
Never married women
followed by
women married less than 20 years
women married more than 20 years
men marrid more than 20 years
men married less than 20 years
unmarried men.

Every day an american wife stays married after 20 years, she is giving up some of her live expectantcy to her husband..

Now maybe you Ozzie's and Zild's are kinder to your spouses... but your post doesn't indicate it.
You should get down on your knees and kiss her feet this very minute!! and not just her feet, the very ground she walks upon.. and not just today-- everyday! (do it often enough, and she might be willing to forgo a year or two of life..and if you tell her you got the idea at AWAD-- she might give up the idea you're wasting time on the computer! )

The very idea! we little women work our fingers to the bone, bear your children, and you insult us!

Of course men can have equality with women--once they are equal to it!
all said in good spirit--but really you should kiss her feet every once in a while...

Tsuwm recalls: malist and masculinist as male counterparts to feminist.

Masculinist has one syllable too many. The counterpart of feminist (Note: not femininist) should be masculist.

As for hominist, since the Latin homo meant, at least nominally, human being irrespective of sex, it should mean someone who advocates equal rights for human beings. This would suggest virist for the male version of feminist.

that's as may be; but masculinist has made it into the dictionary(s) -- not as the opposite of feminist, however, but as an advocate of male *supremacy -- more like Limbaugh's feminazi, I suppose. (which is why it was rejected during our earlier discussion)

Virist for the male version of feminist

This might mean that the proper study of virists is virology, but that make problems, since we already have viruses (viri?) to complicate things.

We've already been innoculated against this particular problem:

Masculists - aren't they women who emasculate their mates? Sort of black widow humans? I know a few of that kind ...

Hominist - sounds like someone who writes homilies as hymns.

And, finally, in reply to Helen's assertion that a woman gives up life expectancy for every year she stays married, I couldn't agree more. Except that here in Zild we call it "killing our wives with kindness"!

Even though the expression itself belongs in another thread ...

The study of viruses should be iology (virus and Gk ios both being from PIE *wisos 'poison').

The study of men is andrology. The study of virists, if by that you mean to study virists, would be viristology, whatever a virist is.

If virist involves vir 'man' then its feminine counterpart could be muliebrist.

Endless possibilities.

Hence the expression "stubborn as a mulie". Explains everything.

Getting back to Tsuwm, and his worthless word of the day
worthless anyday in MHO, are words like
Hostest (why not just host?)
waitress ( ~waiter or server)
aviatrix ( ~aviator/pilot/flyer)
actress (~actor/perormer)
stewardess ( ~steward/attendant)
blonde ( ~blond)

Which brings me back to a question I asked earlier. If you object to gender based distinctions, why do you yourself make a distinction between a milliner and a hatter? The difference you note is gender-based. You said that the only difference between a milliner and a hatter was the gender of the person for whom the hat was being made. Isn't that just as arbitrary a distinction as any of those listed above? I'm not a mother yet, but it struck me while reading your list that mother and father should both be eliminated, if your rule is applied. We have a non-gender specific alternative, parent. Would you say, "Don't call me a mother, I'm a parent?"

nemo stated: I'm not a mother yet, but it struck me while reading your list that mother and father should both be eliminated, if your rule is applied. We have a non-gender specific alternative, parent.

Sorry, nemo, I'm not with you on this one. I agree that helen's hatter/milliner distinction is inconsistent with, indeed seems to cotradict, her aversion to the practice of distinguishing between people performing the same action simply on the basis of sex. However, mother and father are not the same function, so it seems to me that the diffference could be said to relate to job description rather than the sex of the practitioner.

Among other suggestions, the child of Zeus offers as a substitute for waitress ( ~waiter or server)

Round here the standard term is waitron unit.

Posted By: of troy Re: guys and dolls - 01/10/01 10:12 PM
Thanks Max, yes, Mother and Father are different-- and the discussion about Hatter/Milliner I was try to ascertains if there was a difference-- there is a difference between a (black) smith and an iron worker-- and between a black smith and a farrier-- and there might be a difference between a hatter/ milliner. Men's hat where made from leather/skins/fur (beaver) woman's hats felt.. so a man could be a milliner-- (that is he could make hats for women, and a hatter could be a woman-- ) but i don't know enough about the trades/skills..(i do know the difference between a blacksmith/ironworker/farrier.)

I would readily recognize the distinctions between a gynecologist and a urologist. A woman might have an occasion to go to a urologist, but the number of men who would require the help of a gynecologist would be infinitely smaller.

but often the only difference between a waiter/ waitress is the waitress earns less money.... while sometime being requires to do the same work as the waiter except she gets (has) to do it in high heels!

Wife and husband might be replacable-- with spouse. Or disposable, as the need might be......

Interesting concept - I was wondering if there were any eligible batchelorpersons out there.

I believe I can postulate without any fear of valid contradiction that, yes Jo, there is an eligible bachelorperson out there.

The question is (a) for whom, and (b) if the search is for you, then kindly fill out the attached 1,287-question survey and forward US$12,000 to the address below.

The male version of a feminist is a feminist.
There are male feminists and female masculists.
There are feminine female feminists, masculine female masculists, emasculated male feminists and macsculine male masculists.

And that's just my little street!

I just can't abide "masculinist." It sounds like a diminutive. Masculette?

Of course, we all know that a masculinist is one who plays the masculin, a larger, heavier version of the masculia.

Watch out! This looks like one of those statistical fallacies, which are especially frequent in connection with life expectancy. What about the influence of age at first wedding?

Why stop there? What about the influence of age at birth?
