chimpanzee
peony
robot

2, 1 and 1 respectively.

Posted By: wwh Re: How do you pronounce...? - 08/25/03 06:53 PM
All on first syllable.

In my humble opinion, chimpanzee is pronounced with the emphasis on the last syllable, as in chim-pan-ZEE.

Posted By: Faldage Re: Dissenting Opinion - 08/25/03 07:02 PM
That's OK, Father Steve. You don't have to have an opinion on the way you pronounce a word. You can state it as a simple fact.

Yeahbut® Father Steve moonlights as a judge, you know.

chimpanzee and

I'm having a syntax synapse lapse, Father Steve. Is it me, or is there a word missing?

ZEE

yb®

depends on rhythmic context of the sentence for me :)

Too bad we can't have an opinion from J. Fred Muggs.

CHIM-PAN-ZEE ~ kinda sounds like it should be japanese; equal stress on all syllables.

pe-O-ny ~ but only because i've never really known how to pronounce it; i've made a mental note to switch to the first syllable.

RO-BOT ~ definitely a spondee

Posted By: Wordwind Re: How do you pronounce...? - 08/25/03 11:09 PM
First syllable stressed: all three

Posted By: Zed Re: stressful syllables - 08/25/03 11:30 PM
I vote with Consuelo
CHIM-pan-ZEE(subtle difference from yours, mav)
PEE-o-nee
RO-bot

I'm with the CHIM-ZEE crowd, and 1st syl stress for the others...

Posted By: of troy Re: stressful syllables - 08/26/03 12:48 AM
peony is Pee(schwa)nee
you don't hear the o--or at best it is half way between o and a schwa

Posted By: wow Re: How do you pronounce...? - 08/26/03 01:24 PM
chim PAN zee
otherwise I am with wordwind

Posted By: dxb Re: How do you pronounce...? - 08/26/03 04:20 PM
I go with Faldage:

2, 1 and 1 respectively.

Edit: why do you ask?

2nd edit: and why these three words particularly?

I'm with J.Fred Muggs, otherwise I'm with WOW except for the wordwind part and then I'm with AnnaS.

you all are morons. yeah chimpanzee can be pronounced with the stress on the 3rd or second syllable, but only on the second if you combine the 2nd and 3rd: chim-panzee. but RO-BOT? what? hell no. RO-bot.

Posted By: Buffalo Shrdlu Re: robo-tripping - 02/10/04 07:14 PM
you all are morons

Keerful. It might could be Ben Hawkins. He'll kill ya just to save the life of his kitten.

Posted By: Capfka Re: robo-tripping - 02/10/04 09:31 PM
Nice of him to pop in and give us a neat collective noun for the group. Morons. It has a ring to it, n'est-ce pas?

Well, yes...there was. And here's our esteemed movie star in one of his finer moments. A species, I might add, noted for it's high intelligence:

Ah, what fun. Been a while since we've had a brachiating troll around here.

(I wonder if poor ben has been holding his emotions in since last August...?)
