it's stupid , but i was wondering where does a word taxi come from?

It is short for taximeter, which is the name of the device which adds up the miles and calculates the fare.

But what is the etymology of taximeter, I have no idea at all. If my ancient memory serves me aright, I think the term originated in France, somewhere around the 1880s 0r 90s.

Just happen to have the AHD in my lap (making sure I used ascribe properly in my stray sheep post) and I looked it up.

It's from taxe, tax, charge, from Old French taxer, TO TAX + -METER.
