I think I learned this word while reading Cicero's orations about Catiline, who was promoting internecine strife in Rome. I am surprised that the root does not appear in more English words. But internal strife within us can be caused by Necator americanus, the hookworm.

Thanks for that one, you finally pushed me into checking the pronunciation! I have read it infrequently but never *heard anyone use it.
