I think the island was named for the lighthouse.Hard to tell which came first, the hen or the egg.

Pharos was the name of the island first. According to Liddle and Scott (http://makeashorterlink.com/?T187144E) the island is mentioned by that name in the Oddyssey, long before the famous lighthouse was built.

Thanks, Bingley. Old Odysseus sure was a lousy navigator, wasn't he.
Twenty years to get home, and he hit every other port in the Mediterranean
before he could find Ithaca.
