Latin is the preferred language of the Vatican, but don't hold it against the language. It had no say in the matter.

Did I just read this wrong or is Anu's first sentence today
a little religious profiling???

A little religious profiling would be "a priest, a rabbi and an buddhist monk walk into a bar". I'd say this week's introduction lies more along the lines of a cheap shot, a wee bit prejudicial and a sideways kick at the currently popular straw man.

Disappointing, yes, but hopefully Anu will return to the clever, dry and insightful commentary I've come to expect from the site.

Welcome

And I'd say a "wee bit prejudicial" and not his usual
quality.

If by "profiling" you mean that he's singling out the Vatican, I don't think that's what he's doing. I think that he has never made much of a secret of his thoughts about religion in general, and it's his web site. He has no obligation, other than his own sense of propriety and his own best interest, to any of us to refrain from making statements that some might find offensive. None of us is here under duress. I frankly think that Anu goes about as far as he possibly can to avoid giving offense without shackling his own freedom to express his beliefs. I frequently encounter people who take issue with my beliefs far more offensively, and with far less sense of moral responsibility, than any comment I've seen from Anu. Anyone, of course, may disagree.

I guess I must have missed them, what are his thoughts about
religion. I am not disagreeing with Anu, I just thought I
picked up a bit of sarcasm there, and made a comment. But
is he anti/pro religion?

I can't cite specific examples of things he's written, but over however many years it may have been since I subscribed to the newsletter I've gotten a pretty firm impression that Anu is fact- and reason-driven, and finds faith-based doctrine difficult to accept. Again, my impression. Sarcastic, sure, but not obviously vitriolic. Just a little poke.

and, on Anu's personal page he lists "organizations I support", one of which is the Freedom from Religion Foundation.

Perhaps I saw that once upon a time.
