Oniomania is another word for the urge to shop till you drop, habit of the
debit, thrill of the bill. According to a pearl of ancient wisdom, we don't
acquire things, things acquire us. In the case of oniomaniacs, it is perhaps
the fun of acquiring things that acquires them. Imelda Marcos of the
Philippines could be one prime example of this category, also known as
shopaholics, though she could be better known as a shoeaholic.

This week we'll look at some more uncommon words with common suffixes.

How about buyomania. Anyone around here get Smithsonian? Well, in one of the issues, the Last Page was apparently written by an oniomaniac. you can tell because he's talking about his mania. I can't find itanywhere. Well, if you have Smithsonian you could probably find it.

Not uncommon, kleptomania

an abnormal, persistent impulse or tendency to steal, not prompted by need

pyromania - a persistent compulsion to start destructive fires


erotomania - persistent abnormally strong sexual desire

trichotillomania - persistent pulling out of hair (Could not verify this on internet, but I am reasonably sure it is correct

cacodaemonomania - being possessed by the devil
cacospectomania - obsessive staring at something repulsive
cingulomania - excessive desire to hold someone in your arms

dipsomania - insatiable craving for alcoholic beverages

nosomania - overwhelming homesickness
oikomania - mental disorder caused by an abusive home
opsomania - obsessive craving for a certain kind of food
parateresiomania - obsession with being a voyeur

I'm positive that my little brother had this when he was younger. He would pull his hair out and eat it for brestas, which meant breakfast, in kidspeak. Luckily, he stopped before he went bald.
