...has some profound meanings too, which I believe we might have discussed previously, but I'm not good at the Search

Just one, far as I know.

The number 42, or six-times-nine, (as stated by Douglas Adams in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"; the first in his 'Trilogy' of 5 books) is the answer to Life, The Universe and Everything.

In my defense, there may be someone reading who is not aware of it.

More than you ever wanted to know: Wikipedia on 42
For example:
The eight digits of pi beginning from 242,422 places after the decimal point are 42424242.

No way, ParkinT. The ability to cite Adams chapter and verse is a prerequisite to membership here.

In the beginning, the Universe was created. This made a lot of people angry, and has been widely regarded as a bad idea.

6 x 9 using base 13 is coincidentally 42
Posted By: tsuwm Re: The number 42 - 03/15/07 06:34 PM
and I've said this many times.

~joe (maybe as many as 42) friday

edit: yes, Adams claimed that 6x9 = 42[base 13] is just coincidence; but you gonna believe someone who's still dead?

Other quote: "I don't think so, Tim".

With base ten 42 being 4 tens plus two, we should get base 13 42 as four thirteens plus two, equal to 54 base ten. How can two different base values be equal in two digits?

6 (in any base) times 9 (in any base) equals 54.
42[base13] is, as you stated, 4 thirteens (e.g. 52) plus 2 more.
Voila! 56[10] equals 42[base13]
{I realized hours after writing this that I had missed the mark.}

>6[base13] times 9[base13] equals 42[base10].

wha??

base 10: 6x9=54 [5 tens + 4 ones]
base 13: 6x9=42 [4 thirteens + 2 ones]

(42 base 10 = 33 base 13)

It has often been misstated that "Forty-Two is the number".
Actually, it is "Four Two base thirteen"
Much the same way that 0x50 {hex notation} is not "Fifty" but rather, "Five Zero".

Le'ssee: 42 decimal is 33 base 13, but 42 base 13 is 54 decimal. "You know, there are 10 kinds of people in the world: those who know binary and those who don't." Now, 42 octal is 24 decimal, but 42 decimal is 52 octal which is 2E hex which is 00101010 binary. Interestingly enough, 42 sexagesimal is ... er, wait a minute. What's Unicode for cuneiform 42?
