Abide is a very old word that should not be allowed to
become obsolete.
"But now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; and the greatest of these is love."

Well, I've just seen a film, 28 Days Later, which had Abide With Me on the soundtrack, so it's still alive, if not kicking.
