The Moog Synthesizer is a million times better.
The trouble with the theremin was off key all the time, like someone playing a violin by sliding their fingers from one tone to the next.

a friend has a theremin, I haven't had a chance to try it yet. it ought to be fun, but you're right, you have to have wide ears...

Not so hot for playing tonal tunes but great for effect if that's the effect you want.
