This is my first post. I just found the book at a public library: *The Logophile's Orgy: Favorite Words of Famous People* by Lewis Burke Frumkes (Delacorte Press, 1995). 220 "writers, scientists, educators, humorists, and celebrities" contributed. It's out of print and has no index. I just created an eleven page index, much too long to post here, I assume, but I think I could email it, especially if you would be interested in commenting on it and have access to the book. johliger@facstaff.wisc.edu

Welcome, johliger.
Sounds cool, but think I'll pass on the index until I find out whether I can get the book.

Just what _is_ a "logophile"? Someone who likes brand symbols? A collector of tree sections? Someone whose prefered mode of progress is by crawling along? (Low Go)
It is a word completely new to me, and I seek elucidation so that I may include it in my repertoire.

I just shopped this title on the Net. Barnes and Noble wanted a mere $18.90 for a used copy from one of their secondary sources. Bookfinder offered me three different copies at 8.95, 9.00 and 12.00. I ordered the 12.00 model from a company called Alibris, which I have not used before. Thanks for alerting me to the existence of this text; it sounds like a fun read and a useful reference ... for those who suffer from logophylia, anyway.

Just what _is_ a "logophile"?
from philo- (lover) + logos (word) we got philology, which is now much overloaded; so someone coined logophile to mean specifically 'word lover'.
here are some other interesting logo-words:
logodaedaly - playing with words; capricious coining of words
logolept - a word maniac
logology - the science of words
logomachy - contention about words; a war of words
logomisia - disgust with certain words
logorrhea - excessive and incoherent talking; diarrhea of the mouth

The other day I went to the bookstore to buy a dictionary. The clerk showed me a really cheap one. I couldn't find the words to thank him. ... I did, however, buy a thesaurus. I thought that was very nice, pleasurable, agreeable, copasetic, decent thing to do...
