hey guys wht do u think this word PSYCHEDELIC means.....according to me..Psychedelic is a state of mind.......which is after sleeping and before awakening.....according to my knowledge it is hallucinatory.......having mind's awarenesss also has vivid sound and colours....it is like when u go in a diffrent state of mind like trance state....in which your conscious mind goes to sleep and the unconscious mind is in action.........in tht u r in ur own world...in ur own utopia....its like an active meditation where u go beyond ur thought,mind and ur own individuality........as far as visuals are concern u can picturise diffrent sounds,colours,fire,clouds,air,etc.........it is beyond normal world.........dis is hte only info i had abt psychedelic ................if any of u can put some light on it .........it is whole-heartedly accepted.....

Well 'psyche' is the mind and 'delein' means manifest. The word is a neologism coined in the 50s I think to meet the demand for describing the new experiences people were having in the West with strong drugs, both naturally occuring ones and lab ones - specifically ones in the tryptamine family like dimethyl-tryptamine (DMT). I've forgotten who coined it now. The idea of 'clarity' and thus the visual is deeply associated with the psychedelic, as you point out. As religious experiences have often been associated with visual enlightenemnt as well, there seems to be a close association between a 'psychedelic' state of mind (whether drug induced or not) and one of religious (or meditative) revelation - though many may dispute it. Psychedelic is a state of mind.......which is after sleeping and before awakening.....There are specific terms for hallucinatory experiences or sensations surrounding falling asleep or waking. "Hypnogogia" (or its adjective form, hyponogogic) refers to events as a drowsy person is falling asleep. The awakening counterpart is "hypnopompic." http://makeashorterlink.com/?E18C121AB

That's like lucid dreaming, except that that's meant to be more intentional, I think. It's also considered a state of intense or other-worldly awareness between sleep and dream, awake and asleep. Some children's books depict the 'film' between day and night as a doorway, and certainly others have speculated that the threshold is significant.

What about if it's not a hallucination? Sometimes I wake up enough to be aware of Candi getting up and moving about if he's leaving at some ungodly hour of the morning but not enough to be able to do or say anything. Is there a word for this state or would it be included in hypnogogia/hypnopompia?

Hypnopompic states encompass, I believe, more that just hallucinations. The term as I understand applies to the general mental state between sleep and wakefulness, and can include such phenomena as altered perception, hallucination, and paralysis of the body while the mind is fully awake. I have experienced the last of these and it was very frightening.

I always think of the state of hypnopompia (?) as "coasting". Lovely on a Sunday morning...*sigh*
