Here are the blufffs for the latest Hogwash word:

maffle

A. To celebrate with boisterous rejoicing.

B. To vex, specifically to cause bristling, as in the hair on the back of a provoked cat.

C. Talk indistinctly; usually in a low voice.

D. In horticulture, the process of bending the main stem of a flowering vine and keeping it almost horizontal, in order to concentrate the growth hormone on the tip of the plant and not on the side stems.

E. To flatten a tone in order to produce a different chord.

F. A mythological creature from central Africa.

G. To bewilder, confuse, especially by repeated feints to the head.

H. The part of a pencil sharpener that holds the pencil in place.

I. Swing back and forth rapidly, oscillate.

J. MAFFle = to cock-up big time. A very new word from UK's MAFF (Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food) 's handling of the Foot and Mouth scandal.

K. To wad two dissimilar substances together.

L. In fashion design, a rectangular or square pleat on a garment for decorative purposes.

M. The keystone in a gothic arch.

Two submitters gave answers sufficiently close to the real thing so as to gain the three points for a correct answer (Bravo, paulb and maverick!) We'll have a rather long voting period -- until Monday morning, 6/18, Eastern time. Good luck to all.

Hm. Slight problem with that sort of announcement. Now I can't vote. Or at least would have to either
A. Leave it till the last moment to avoid giving the game away
ii} Throw a curve ball bluff, which
4-1) Would be self-defeating by dint of appearing before specified in (A)....

As I mentioned to mav in a PM:

If you submit a correct definition you don't get to vote. That's why you get 3 points, as opposed to folks that vote for the correct answer and only get 2.

Hope that clears it up!

Yep. Absolutely. Understood. No problem at all.

Now: what am I bid for one slightly used answer, never raced or rallied, one titled lady owner...?

Let's see..so now we just have to reduce it to the 2 most similar definitions and vote for one of them? Or are they automatically deleted?

And a new question arises out of the length of voting time. Are we allowed to change our vote before the deadline?

I don't see 2 particularly similar defs, so my gut is telling me it's M . I'm not completely maffled, you know!
