Mencken gives a list of church related English words.
Among them is "glebe".When I lived in Virginia, I used to drive on Glebe Road going from Oakton to Georgetown for appointments at rheumatology clinic. I could not find out
how it got that name.

Webster's 1913 Dictionary

Definition: \Glebe\, n. [F. gl[`e]be, L. gleba, glaeba, clod, land,
soil.]
1. A lump; a clod.

2. Turf; soil; ground; sod.

Fertile of corn the glebe, of oil, and wine.
--Milton.

3. (Eccl. Law) The land belonging, or yielding revenue, to a
parish church or ecclesiastical benefice.

ah, a senior moment Dr bill, i brought up glebe last year, and you made almost the same comment!

i used to live a Zerega Avenue in the bronx, Glebe Avenue terminated outside my door(like a T). Glebe Ave. doesn't run straight, but makes a dog leg round to Westchester Ave, and at the other end terminated near St Anne's church-- the building is new, but the alter was donated to the church by Queen Anne. (zip 10473 i think, in the bronx if you want to see it!) the avenue marks the edge of the old church glebe.
--trinity church (in Manhattan) had a glebe avenue too, but its been renamed..(and i forget--learned that from the book Gotham--Rector street is from the church rectory)
