I cannot grasp the meaning of the word "cant" in this sentence from "Innocents Abroad". Twain is talking about the joy of discovery --- "Daguerre, when he commanded the sun, riding in the zenith, to print the landscape upon his insignifi cant silvered plate, and he obeyed; "

You jest, surely? It must be a simple insertion of an extraneous space, unless you would care to explain what the word insignifi means.
